What is powder coating?
With powder coating, a dry pigment powder is sprayed electrostatically onto the fitting. The spot is then cured in an oven at about 180°C, where the powder melts into a smooth, hard, bonded layer. The result is far more durable than wet paint: scratch-resistant, not brittle, and able to withstand the heat of the LED module.
Difference with wet paint / spray lacquer
- Scratch resistance: powder coating is significantly harder than wet paint.
- Heat resistance: up to 200°C, essential with GU10 and older halogen spots.
- Colour stability: no yellowing over the years — wet paint can discolour under warm bulbs.
- Environment: powder coating contains no solvents and waste powder is reused.
Which spots do we coat?
All metal and aluminium recessed spots, surface-mounted spots, GU10 spots and trimless fittings. Plastic or polycarbonate housings aren't suitable for powder coating (their melting point is too low). Not sure whether your spot is suitable? Send us a photo.
